The Blonds – Fall 2013

A stampede of devilishly dressed blondes heads right towards you- bound in ropes and clad in fur, the click of their Louboutin heels resonate and fill the room. What sounds like a salacious sex fantasy is actually The Blonds Fall 2013 runway show during New York Fashion Week. Taking inspiration from some of the most classic thrillers of our time, David and Phillipe put on a ridiculously entertaining show.

Not surprisingly though, the pre-show festivities were almost as entertaining as the show itself. The crowd was full of celebrities and faux-socialites. Not to be missed, Carmen Electra and Trina, amongst others, filled the front row.

Once the show began, everyone’s attention was immediately captured. Dresses made entirely of rope and crystals strutted down the runway followed by a dress made entirely of leather belts and a monstrous fur straitjacket.

All in all, The Blonds Fall 2013 runway show was wicked good time.

Neodandi – Fall 2013

Much like their Spring collection, Neodandi’s Fall 2013 offering embodied energy, movement, and drama. Forgoing the usual run-of-the-mill show, models moved and posed through the impromptu square-shaped runway at EN Japanese Brasserie. The models created striking visual tableaus as they interacted with dancers and one another.

The menswear options this season featured pinstripes, patchwork, and intricate folding. The clothes showed a keen eye for detail and convinced us of Niilartey’s commitment to artistry and craftsmanship. Amongst the selection were blazers, cropped pants, casual button-down shirts, and knee-length coats.

“The idea is to bring back the art of dressing well, for yourself and for your surroundings. People benefit from taking good care of themselves, and the way you dress expresses and reflects that. People in history realized this, and we’re now coming to a time where people are beginning to realize it again.”

The Neodandi team is preparing to open their first NYC boutique in early Spring, finalizing the move of their originally Seattle-based atelier.

Following the show, guests enjoyed a delectable selection from Chef Abe Hiroki at EN Japanese Brasserie. Delicate sushis and hors d’ oeuvres along with expertly mixed cocktails provided a perfect finish to the evening.

“ALIVE” – Ricardo Seco – Fall 2013

“Brooklyn embodied” – just one way to describe Ricardo Seco’s Fall 2013 Menswear Collection. Inspired by his new surroundings in Williamsburg, Brooklyn – Seco paid homage to the diversity and grittiness that make up this burgeoning neighborhood.

The collection, entitled “ALIVE”, was sparked by the intersection of Hasidic and Hipster, two very present communities in Brooklyn. Seco mixed the strict formality of the Hasidic dress code with the more unkempt and effortless looks pervasive in the Hipster community – accomplishing a finished product that was modern, luxurious and unabashedly cool.

Seco’s interpretation, of what’s been described as “Urban Orthodox”, manifest itself in a collection of relaxed and oversized silhouettes in a combination of leather, velvet, wool, cashmere and cotton textiles. Hints of green added some visual interest to an otherwise sleek and minimal palette of black, grays and whites.

What made this overall successful collection even more impressive was Seco’s ability to paint this vivid picture while incorporating elements of his Mexican Heritage. From the concept, materials, construction and finished look – we enjoyed every aspect of Seco’s Fall 2013 Collection.

Highland – Fall 2013

If rock climbing, snowboarding or road tripping are part of your normal weekend routine – then Highland’s Fall 2013 collection is right up your alley. Reinforced mountain pants, printed shirts, ribbed knits, hoodies and quilted outerwear complete the modern and slightly youthful outdoorsmen wardrobe.

Trophies, bikes, and rock-climbing pegs adorned the space, filling in the tiny details for this Highland man with an active lifestyle. But things weren’t quite what they seemed; cans of PBR strewn about with open bags of Doritos and a perpetually fuming neon green bong told a completely different story.

Music echoed through the space and the smell of stale beer and cigarettes filled the air. The models lazed casually about in what appeared to be the final moments of an all night rager; possibly a celebration after a memorable weekend climb.

Highland presented another season of effortless American Cool.

“Never Forever” – Elliott Evan – Fall 2013

Creating something that is decidedly futuristic and timeless is quite a feat; Elliott Evan in his Fall 2013 collection seemed to accomplish exactly that. His introduction into New York Fashion Week, titled ‘NEVER FOREVER’, featured a combination of items that layered and draped in beautifully asymmetric ways. Mildly somber and slightly haunting, the clothes conjured up imagery of men who have weathered lifetimes of arctic journeys, and showed no sign of stopping.

The pieces were the perfect testament to Evan’s craftsmanship. Often times rugged looks can come across as lazy and unfinished, but there was no hint of that in Evan’s collection. You could clearly see the thoughtfulness and refinement in the use of textures, layers, and embellishments.

Evan blurred the edges of the class male silhouette, a trend we’ve noticed in several shows this season. Garments with high collars and swooping drapes gave a hint of life to an otherwise serious collection. Dyed wools, cottons, and leathers added a dimension of warmth and comfort while reinforcing the concept of forever.

Congratulations to Elliott Evan, with what we would consider a succesful début into New York Fashion Week.

Menswear Fashion – Fall 2013 – Part 1

Now that PITTI UOMO and the Paris, London and Milan menswear runway shows have passed, we can take a quick retrospective before things start to gear up in New York.

We definitely felt a shift in the energy regarding menswear this season. Many designers showed a strong interest in giving men legitimate and slightly daring options to introduce into their wardrobe. There were several looks that we would have worn straight off the runway. A lot of the designers made strong choices in terms of material, color, and shape to provide a set of options that clearly announce fashion and style without diminishing the delicate male ego.

So far, we’ve seen essential items re-imagined in a combination of futuristic and strikingly nostalgic textiles, refined and luxurious sports- and street-wear, as well as a range of silhouette play. While Hedi Slimane continued the trend of skinny jeans on even skinnier legs in his Saint Laurent menswear collection, brands like ETRO, Emporio Armani and Dsquared2 reminded us of the naturally masculine figure in looser fitting slacks. Designers like Vivienne Westwood, Umit Benan, and Philipp Plein showed us a very refined edge of street-wear.

All in all, we’ve been fairly entertained and impressed with what has been presented so far. Hopefully New York, will have some interesting elements to add to the conversation. In the meantime, here’s a photo gallery of our top 75 looks so far…

Maison Kitsunè has really capture our interest as of late. People have always said that fashion and music are related- Maison Kitsunè reminds us just how true that statement is. With a decidedly fresh and refined appeal – much like their namesake, the fox, they tap into a thriving subculture where music and fashion coexist.
